Kashmiri saffron price per gram in 2026, in AUD
Saffron is priced by the gram and sold by the story. That is why the numbers are so hard to compare. This page lists our full price ladder in AUD, the same prices in the other four currencies, what the price includes, and what the rest of the market charges in 2026. Every figure comes from the same price table that runs the checkout.

What the rest of the market charges in 2026
From our October 2026 market notes, international direct-to-consumer retail, 1 g packs unless stated. Full breakdown with sources in saffron price per gram.
- Kashmiri Mongra, US resellers: USD 18–21 per gram, typically 1 g only, organic or “lab-tested” claims without a published batch report.
- Kashmiri saffron, UK: GBP 15–19 per gram from online sellers and Indian grocers; supermarket “saffron” at GBP 3 per 1 g sachet is Spanish or Iranian and usually a lower grade.
- Kashmiri saffron in India: INR 400–600 per gram from Pampore brands, which is where most “cheap Kashmiri saffron” listings abroad are sourced before relabelling.
- Persian Super Negin: USD 5–10 per gram; Afghan Super Negin: USD 10–16; Spanish Coupe (D.O.P. La Mancha): USD 7–14.
- Below about USD 8 per gram for anything labelled Kashmiri, assume it is not.
Why Kashmiri saffron costs about twice Persian
Kashmir produced 19.58 tonnes in 2024–25. Iran grows about 90 % of the world’s supply. Mongra grade means the three red stigmas are pinched off by hand the afternoon the flower is picked, with the pale style trimmed away. That is around 150 flowers per gram, picked at dawn in a three-week window on small family plots at 1,600 m. The 2025 harvest was hit by drought and prices rose again. A protected name, GI No. 635, and a per-lot ISO 3632 test add cost that a bulk exporter does not carry. You pay for a rarer thing, and you are entitled to proof that it is the thing. See Kashmiri vs Persian vs Spanish saffron.
What our price includes
- Stigma-only Mongra from named growers in Pampore, bought at the field above the auction price.
- An ISO 3632 test of this lot by a NABL-accredited laboratory, with the crocin number printed on the vial and the full report on the verify page.
- Tracked express shipping from Srinagar; free over $110.
- Import duties and taxes, paid by us before delivery.
- 30-day returns on unopened vials, and double your money back if an independent ISO 3632 test reads below the label.
How to compare saffron prices honestly
- Compare per gram, not per pack. 0.4 g sachets and “2 × 0.5 g” packs hide a high per-gram rate.
- Compare the grade. Lacha keeps the colourless style attached, so a gram of Lacha colours less than a gram of Mongra. See what Mongra means.
- Compare the crocin number. A lot at 250 colours about a quarter more than a lot at 200, gram for gram. No number, no comparison. How to read a lab report.
- Add shipping and duties. A cheaper sticker price with duties collected at the door is often the dearer saffron.
- Check the harvest date. Safranal fades; last year’s lot at this year’s price is a bad deal.
Price questions
How much does Kashmiri saffron cost per gram in 2026?
Genuine GI-tagged Kashmiri Mongra sold direct from Pampore costs $31 per gram for a 1 g vial from us, falling to $22.50 per gram in a 10 g tin and $17.80 per gram at 100 g. US-based resellers list Kashmiri saffron at USD 18 to 21 per gram and UK sellers at GBP 15 to 19 per gram, usually without a per-lot lab report. Persian Super Negin retails at USD 5 to 10 per gram and Spanish Coupe at about USD 7 to 14.
Why is Kashmiri saffron more expensive than Iranian saffron?
Scarcity, labour and yield. Kashmir produced under 20 tonnes in 2024–25 against Iran’s several hundred; Mongra is trimmed stigma by stigma by hand on small family plots at 1,600 m; and Kashmir’s harvests are volatile, with 2025 badly hit by drought. A protected origin (GI No. 635) and a per-lot ISO 3632 test add cost a bulk exporter does not carry. The result is roughly double the price of a good Persian Super Negin.
Is cheap Kashmiri saffron real?
Rarely. Trade guides warn that saffron listed under about USD 8 per gram is very likely adulterated, cut with style (Lacha sold as Mongra), old, or Iranian saffron relabelled. Kashmiri saffron cannot be grown at scale, so a Kashmiri label at Iranian prices should prompt one question: show me the lab report for this batch.
What is the price of 1 g, 5 g and 10 g of Kashmiri saffron in Australia?
From us, delivered to Australia: 1 g $31, 5 g $122, 10 g $225. Shipping is $14.99 and free over $110. Retail-packed saffron needs no import permit in Australia. No GST is charged under the AUD 1,000 threshold.
Do your prices include duties and taxes?
For the US, UK, UAE and Australia, yes: duties and import taxes are handled by us and the checkout price is final. For Canada and the rest of the world the carrier collects any duty before delivery; the rule for your market is shown at checkout and on this page, never hidden.
Is it cheaper to buy saffron in bulk?
Yes. The per-gram price falls at every step of the ladder: about 10 % off at 2 g, 21 % at 5 g, 27 % at 10 g and over 40 % at 100 g compared with the 1 g vial. Saffron keeps for two years in a sealed vial away from light, so a 5 g tin is the best value for anyone who cooks with it most weeks. Above 100 g we quote individually on the bulk orders page.
How much does saffron cost per dish?
A biryani or risotto for four takes 15 to 20 threads, roughly a tenth of a gram. From a 1 g vial that is $2.58–$3.88 per dish; from a 5 g tin, $2.03–$3.05. Expensive by the gram, cheap by the plate.
